Monument Valley is a place that hardly needs an introduction—its towering buttes and sweeping desert plains have become synonymous with the American West. But for photographers seeking a new perspective on this iconic landscape, few experiences rival the breathtaking vantage point from Hunts Mesa.

Earlier this year, I had the chance to photograph Monument Valley from this elevated viewpoint on an unforgettable overnight adventure with a Navajo guide from Monument Valley Safari. It was a journey filled with rugged trails, golden light, and wide desert silence that will stay with me forever.

Getting There:

Into the Heart of Navajo Land Access to Hunts Mesa is only possible with a Navajo guide, and for good reason—the route is remote, challenging, and unmarked. We set out in a high-clearance vehicle, bouncing over slickrock and weaving through red sand canyons. Our guide, a seasoned local from Monument Valley Safari, navigated effortlessly, sharing stories of the land and culture as we went. As we climbed higher, the views began to open up—and then suddenly, there it was: the classic expanse of Monument Valley stretched out below us like a painting. From this angle, the familiar formations—The Mittens, Totem Pole, Yei Bi Chei—took on a whole new grandeur.

Photographing the Mesa:

Light, Texture, and Silence We arrived in the late afternoon, just in time for golden hour. The sandstone glowed beneath a moody sky, creating a dramatic backdrop for our compositions. Setting up tripods along the mesa’s edge, we captured layers of warm light and shadow unfolding across the valley floor.

The next morning, we rose before dawn to catch the sunrise. As is often the way, the weather didn’t cooperate and the valley was socked in with rain and clouds.

It’s rare to find a view so expansive, yet so intimate, and Hunts Mesa offers just that. Each frame captured felt like a gift from the land.

More Than a Photo Op: A Cultural Encounter

What made this trip truly special wasn’t just the scenery—it was the connection to the land and its people. Our Navajo guide didn’t just lead the way; he opened a window into a deeper understanding of Monument Valley. Hearing the names, stories, and sacred meanings behind the formations added a profound dimension to the experience.

I will be back
